Pins might be the most overlooked category in fastening hardware — small, simple, easy to assume they’re all interchangeable. They’re not. The different types of pins on the market — dowel pins, detent pins, snapper pins, and a handful of others — each solve a distinct mechanical problem, and grabbing the wrong one can mean a joint that slips, an assembly that won’t align, or a part that’s a headache to remove.

Dowel pins

Dowel pins are precision-ground cylindrical pins used to align and locate two components relative to each other — not to carry a load or resist vibration, but to guarantee two parts line up exactly the same way every single time. They’re pressed into tightly reamed, matching holes, which is why dowel pins are machined to much tighter tolerances than most fasteners.

  • Standard dowel pins — general-purpose alignment in machinery and tooling
  • Pull dowel pins — include a threaded hole on one end so a screw can be used to extract them
  • Stepped dowel pins — different diameters at each end, often used where the two mating parts have different hole sizes
Why it matters
Dowel pins aren’t a fastener in the traditional sense — they’re a positioning tool. Mold alignment, robotic tooling, and precision assembly fixtures all rely on dowel pins to keep repeat operations accurate down to the thousandth of an inch.

Detent pins

Detent pins use a spring-loaded ball that protrudes slightly from the pin’s shaft and locks into a matching recess, holding the pin in place without any secondary hardware. Because they install and release with a simple push and pull, detent pins are the standard choice anywhere a joint needs to be adjusted or disassembled frequently without tools — think adjustable equipment handles, telescoping linkages, and quick-change tooling.

Snapper pins (wire lock pins)

Snapper pins — also called wire lock pins or safety spring pins — combine the function of a clevis pin and cotter pin into one part. A looped wire snaps over the shaft to lock the pin in place, and reverses just as easily for removal. They’re popular anywhere a fast, tool-free, but genuinely secure connection is needed, including scaffolding, trailer hitches, and heavy equipment attachments.

Spring and roll pins

Spring pins — also known as roll pins or tension pins — are hollow, slotted cylindrical pins that compress slightly when driven into a hole and then push outward against the hole wall to hold themselves in place. No secondary locking device needed. They’re lighter and cheaper than solid dowel pins, and common in gear assemblies, hinges, and small machinery where some shock absorption is useful.

  • Slotted spring pins — a single longitudinal slot for compressibility
  • Coiled spring pins — a tighter coil design for higher shock absorption and flexibility

Clevis and cotter pins

Clevis pins have a forked design used to create a pivoting connection between two parts — common in towing equipment, hydraulic cylinders, and machinery hinges. On their own, a clevis pin can work its way out under vibration, which is why they’re almost always paired with a cotter pin or wire lock pin as a secondary retainer. Cotter pins are single-use: their legs bend outward during installation and should always be replaced, never reused.
